  • Abstract
The transmission of solitons at 2.5 Gb/s with a gain-switched and optically filtered laser diode as a signal source is analyzed. The effective pulsewidth is numerically obtained as a function of distance for different filter locations. The pulse spreading observed in transmission experiments is shown to be due to the pulse-to-pulse frequency jitter originating in the gain-switched laser diode. This spreading is suppressed with the use of periodically spaced filters.<>
