Abstract
The paper shows how the concept of the "goodness factor" developed for electrical machines can be applied to electromagnets to enable optimum design to be found for cases in which maximum magnetic flux or force is required and in which power dissipated in the coil or coil current density is fixed. The general relations derived are applied by way of an example to a specific type of electromagnet. Experimental results were obtained on a number of different designs of this type and are shown to verify the relations.
