Abstract
This article contrasts short-term and relatively optimistic predictions for a business emerging from a severe cyclical recession with a more cautious framework which emphasises long-term structural conditions. These structural conditions set limits on management´s ability to recover and reduce costs. Using this alternative framework of analysis the article argues that a deeper and more pronounced restructuring of the European cars business is inevitable.<>
