Abstract
The CAPTAIN (character and pattern telephone access information network) system is a Videotex system in Japan. The first phase of the experimental service was carried out from December 1979 to March 1981. Many kinds of surveys were carried out to obtain user opinions of the system performance. Based on the findings obtained, the first experimental system was enhanced and the second phase of experimental service was started in August 1981. Commercial service is scheduled to be launched in 1984 and the development of the commercial system has already been started. This paper outlines the enhanced functions, development of the commercial system, and future development of the CAPTAIN system.
