Abstract
Projects in the power and chemical process industries are described which have a common theme, namely the harsh environment which makes safe control both essential and very difficult, and which require the use of advanced measurement, control and signal processing techniques to make them possible. The methods by which the problems are resolved, and the quality of engineering necessary, are carefully examined. The importance of the work of the National Standards Laboratories in this context is stressed.
