Abstract
The method of magnetic force scanning tunneling microscopy for imaging surface magnetic fields and magnetization distributions is presented. The key elements in its implementation, including probe fabrication, are reviewed, and experimentally supported theoretical modeling to interpret the images is presented. The technique is applied to study important issues in magnetic recording, namely, effects accompanying wavelength reduction in increasing density, and effects associated with insufficient overwrite due to tracking misregistration
