Abstract
After hostilities commenced in August 1914 the Admiralty´s secret intelligence unit, Room 40, stepped-up its monitoring and codebreaking operations against Germany, providing the British armed forces with tide-turning information about the enemy´s plans. This paper highlights Room 40´s operations from the outbreak of hostilities to the war´s end.
