  • Abstract
Recently discovered cryogenic magnetostrictive materials show maximum strains greater than any room temperature materials. These cryogenic magnetostrictors can be combined with high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils to create a sonar transducer with high efficiency and high acoustic-power density. A prototype low-frequency (<1000 Hz) magnetostrictive transducer is described. This transducer uses a terbium-dysprosium (TbDy) magnetostrictor rod with HTS coils cooled to 50-80 K using a single-stage cryocooler. The device is designed for operation at water depths of 100 m and is believed to be the first fully integrated prototype demonstration of HTS
