Abstract
Crystal-field split energy levels for the5
and5
ground configuration of Pm3+in LiYF4 and radiative transition probabilities between these levels were calculated. An electric dipole φ-transition dominates and suggests a CW Pm3+laser is possible unless Pm3+-Sm3+-Nd3+energy transfer quenches the Pm5+flurorescence. This dominating transition is from the5
