Abstract
Surge arresters are being installed in proximity to HV underground cable circuits. Cable circuits, due to their relatively high capacitance and low surge impedance, can impose a severe duty on an arrester. This paper presents the results of a study utilizing a transient analyzer which investigated the effects of both arrester and circuit parameters on this duty and presents the options available to the application engineer. To facilitate the verification of the capability of arresters, various test circuits are proposed, compared, and evaluated in terms of their correlation to the duty imposed by realistic circuits.
