Abstract
Research on lightning performance of compact transmission lines is presented. Various parameters affecting the tripout rate are described, particularly when reduced dielectric clearances are considered. By means of a series of laboratory impulse tests on a geometric scale guyed type structure, the critical flashover voltage of a compact inverted delta configuration is obtained. This parameter is used as an input of a digital program which estimates the lightning tripout rate expected for this type of tower. The compact design of a 400 kV transmission line is proposed and the requirements for future research work are anticipated
