Safe shutdown is the prime concern of salety criteria, but clear singular guidance on achieving it is not available. Many definitions and tne available documentation are listed. Current activities related to safe shutdown are reviewed. The paper concludes that the current activities assume saIe shutdown and that standards committees should review and comment on safe shutdown related publications ano prepare interpretations in the form of position papers.
