Abstract
The d,q pole-by-pole model extends the notion of rotating coupled circuits to the analysis of linear induction machines (LIMs). The initial derivation of this model required a lengthening of the primary iron as leading and trailing end effects were better modeled by additional rail poles. This paper shows this lengthening of the primary can have detrimental effects on simulation results, and develops a conformal mapping analysis which uses the actual primary length as leading and trailing effects are modeled. Comparisons to test data show the model with a nonlengthened primary must be used to accurately simulate certain types of LIMs.
