  • Abstract
Optical memory and blue lasers are bringing a revolutionary change to the electronics industry. A single 5.25 inch optical disk will replace the four hundred 3.5 inch magnetic diskettes required to store a 600 Mbyte database. Optical memory brings an explosion in storage density to information recording in a form which is reliable, economical and portable. Increasing the storage density further requires shortening the wavelength of the laser light utilized. Semiconductor blue lasers will offer this enhancement and allow great strides in industries such as image processing.<>
