Abstract
The reflection of picosecond pulses upon a metal-backed three-layer structure is discussed. The layered system consists of a thin dielectric layer of high dielectric constant, a thick dielectric layer with dielectric loss, and a thin magnetic layer with magnetic loss backed against the metal. The hysteretic behavior of the magnetic layer is also included in the calculations. The purpose of the calculation is to identify the number as well as the type of layers from the picosecond response. A change in the polarity of the reflected signal tail implies hysteretic behavior in magnetic materials and is subject to experimental detection
