Abstract
Stability problems of superconducting wires and their impact on conductor and magnet design are discussed. Stability against electromagnetic disturbances and mechanical disturbances is considered. Stabilizing and destabilizing factors are compared, such as the additional energy release due to current nonuniformity and transient absorption of the heat by helium. The role of the smoothness of the transition characteristics of the superconductor is discussed
