  • Abstract
    The advantages of making pulse-echo measurements in solids with nonuniform transducers are analysed using an extension of earlier finite difference methods. It is shown in particular that a `plane wave only´ transducer leads to much simpler and more easily interpreted echo signals than a conventional uniform or piston transducer. This result is confirmed by a direct comparison with experimental measurements from known defects
