Abstract
A numerical technique for examining a random sample of the pulsed radar return from a chaff cloud is developed. This technique is used to assess the radar cross-section (RCS) range profile of the received return from a typical chaff cloud for pulsed radars with different detectors. Monte-Carlo analyses of the effect of these signals on the range discriminant of a pulsed radar system with a linear detector using AGC, and one with a logarithmic detector, are then carried out. The statistical distribution of the early and late gates is also examined. In some instances the distribution was found to be non-Gaussian, owing to the nonlinear operations performed on the received signals
