Abstract

The need for an incisive and extensive R&D program in information technology has led the European Community to launch ESPRIT, the first phase of which was initiated in 1984, after a pilot phase was started in 1983. The purpose of the present work, which exclusively focuses on the microelectronics sector, is to describe the industrial environment in which the program developed, its main features and objectives, and the most successful achievements and technical results. The author explains how ESPRIT execution has given computer and electronics industries new confidence. The performances of collaborative ventures and how technology transfer is handled are also examined. Finally, an analysis of the industrial spinoffs and the objectives for the second phase of work are presented
