Abstract
A new analytical model of twin-guide laser amplifiers is described which concentrates on the effects of feedback from the facets. The model is sufficiently general to encompass previous results for active and passive directional couplers without feedback. For an active coupler with feed-back, the results show that the device might be used as a compact spatial switch, but reasonable levels of crosstalk can be expected only under rather critical combinations of drive currents and input wavelength
