  • Abstract
The author examines the development of nuclear power throughout the world, commencing with proposals for California, USA. Evidence that nuclear power remains viable in Asia include Japan Atomic Power Co.´s announcement of plans for a 1300 MW reactor in Tokai, Ibaraki prefecture, where the country´s 28-year-old first reactor is still in service. In November, Chinese officials agreed in principle to buy two Canadian Deuterium (Candu) reactors from Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. The US $2.59 billion deal was part of a $6.36 billion package that included technical, infrastructure, mining, and real estate deals. Fueled by natural uranium, the Candu reactor has met with some success in less developed countries. Elsewhere in the developing world, the Government of Indonesia proposed to build its first power reactors near an inactive volcano in the middle of the northern coast of Java
