  • Abstract
A context is provided for understanding where tools fit in the software life cycle. Tools are divided into vertical and horizontal architectures. Vertical tools support specific activities in a single life-cycle phase, such as analysis, design, or testing. Horizontal tools support activities across the entire life cycle, such as project management and cost estimation. The task of tool integration is described. Trends and anticipated changes for the next few years are covered.<>
