Testing and Commissioning of a Modular UHV AC Outdoor Test System

AEP´s continuing research program in the area of UHV and EHV transmission led to the need for a 1200 kV, ac, outdoor test facility. An earlier paper describes the design and development of the 1200 kV test system [1]. In order to verify the test system´s performance and obtain valuable operating information, a series of factory and field tests were conducted on the system and its components. This paper describes the results of these tests and the techniques used to gather the data. The use of a fiber optic data acquisition system in the UHV environment is also described.
