Abstract
In this paper, the author examines how the the legendary Volkswagen Beetle achieved huge success and then bitter failure in the USA. He questions whether it was first-class arrogance in the face of rare achievement? Or an assumption often made by would-be exporters that if something works well in domestic markets it can safely be transplanted overseas?.
