  • Abstract
Safety is fundamental to customer trust in aviation, which demands accident free products and operations. Customer trust in aviation also requires avoiding emergency situations during flight, unscheduled landings, grounding of fleets, disrupted schedules, and other undesirable events. The aviation safety risk management process strives to reduce risk by eliminating or mitigating hazards. This process is shifting from a qualitative approach toward predictive Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) based on Life Data Analysis. The mathematical computations of QRA are complex and can be intimidating to non-mathematicians, but the basic elements and interpretation are fairly comprehensible, so even non-mathematicians can benefit from an understanding of the process. This mathematical complexity can lead to misunderstanding and skepticism. Greater understanding and increased application of QRA can enhance safety in aviation and other critical fields, and the history and case studies of the process demonstrate its credibility, usefulness, and effectiveness.
