Sir Joseph Swan and the invention of the electric lamp

This month, Electronics & Power celebrates the 100th anniversary of the invention of the electric lamp by Sir Joseph Swan. On the 3rd February 1879 in the lecture theatre of the Literary & Philosophical Society at Newcastle, he performed the first practical demonstration of a working lamp. By October of the following year, he was able to light the same auditorium with 20 lamps, the first time any building was lit by incandescent electric lamp.
