Abstract
Polarisation-maintaining optical fibres have been drawn from VAD synthesized preforms with Al2O3 single-crystal rods as stress-applying parts (SAPs). Measured X-ray diffraction patterns have shown that the Al2O3 SAPs are crystallised after heating in and drawing from a carbon furnace. The model birefringence is more than twice that of conventional PANDA fibre with B2O3.SiO2 as SAPs
