Abstract
Production planning is all about having the right materials in the right place, at the right time. Computer systems have mode a big difference to this process, but the author argues that in practical terms the revolution still has a long way to go. This article outlines the evolution of the materials planning process, and offers some pointers to how more recent developments in both manufacturing approaches and information technology can be applied to meet today´s competitive pressures
