Abstract
Very narrow transition width must be attained to achieve areal densities greater than 1 Tbit/inch2. Not only the grain size, but also the grain switching behavior of the recording medium should be considered. In this paper, the magnetization distribution is calculated by an inverse reciprocity operation on the measured readback waveform obtained from a spin-stand. The calculated magnetization distribution at the transitions between bits was less steep than the error function, which suggested the presence of island-like switched grains away from the transition line due to the finite head field gradient and switching field distribution.
