Abstract
Monitoring long term voltage stability of the power grid is necessary to ensure the secure operation of the system. In this paper, the voltage locus of the load phasor as a function of the load increase is studied is studied from a geometric perspective. This locus is used to propose a Voltage Stability Index based on the magnitude of the measured voltage and calculated thevenin equivalent angles. A novel method to calculate only the necessary thevenin parameters is presented. The proposed Voltage Stability Index and the efficient thevenin calculation method are tested on the IEEE-30 Bus system with lagging, unity and leading power factors.
