  • Abstract
Sixty members and guests of the Armour Institute of Technology Branch attended the meeting held in Chapin Hall on February 11, 1909, to hear a paper by Mr. R. H. Rice, of the Board of Supervising Engineers, Chicago Traction, on “Some Problems Connected With the Building of a Large Street Railway System.” After outlining the development of the supervising board, Mr. Rice dealt with each department of the railway system in a general manner. Illustrations were used to show the general methods of procedure of each division, and he then took up in detail the work of the division of power distribution with which he is directly connected. He gave much interesting and valuable information on the underground, overhead, track and conduit construction, together with feeder layouts and special problems connected with them. He also illustrated the use of curves and tables of constants by which the work of the supervising board is greatly facilitated. The paper, considered by those present a most excellent one, was followed by a general discussion.
