Abstract
It carries one-quarter of all the railroad commuters in the U.S., nearly 100 000 daily ¿ a figure soon to be surpassed as ridership continues to increase. It is the famous and infamous and much maligned Long Island Rail Road. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, by comparison, moves 35 000 commuters daily.
