Abstract
Network communication is the foundation for normal operation of digital substation, the on-line communication monitoring becomes necessary. This paper discusses the basis of on-line communication monitoring system for digital substation. The communication network faults have been classified into two layers: (1) the background communication fault; (2) the application communication fault. Though there are serious mutual impacts between these two layer´s failures; the clear understand of two layer failure will be helpful for the fault host location. The background communication failures have been discussed and the methods how to calculate or measure are also given. Normally such failure detection should be supported by communication switches which supports IEC 61850, and the information modeling for switches are also introduced. Taking GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented substation Event) as the example of application communication, its failures behavior and abnormal detection are also given.
