  • Abstract
Describes how microprocessors are infiltrating kitchen appliances-monitoring their performance, regulating their temperature and timing, and diagnosing their malfunctions. Self-diagnostic refrigerators and dishwashers call attention to problems that users can sometimes correct themselves, thus reducing servicing. The way in which microprocessor control in microwave ovens developed is traced. Advanced ovens have audible entry tones, touch controls that will not accept information entered in the wrong sequence, and displays that prompt the user on the next step in programming or advise him to turn the meat or cover the casserole when necessary. Attention is also given to the induction cooktop, recently introduced by General Electric. In discussing refrigerators, it is noted that Whirlpool has just introduced a refrigerator with electronic monitoring, self-diagnostics, and defrost-on-demand. The refrigerator separately regulates the temperatures of the interior and the freezer compartment, which are displayed on the front of the refrigerator. The survey also includes dishwashers, coffee makers, and the use of synthetic speech in appliances.
