As utilities roll out and deploy smart grid and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solutions, it has become obvious that these systems are capable of going far beyond the traditional meter-to-cash applications. Many early adopters are now exploring a multitude of uses of metering data, including applications to improve the operation and management of the electric distribution grid. Specific opportunities include performance monitoring of transformers, cables, and circuits. Furthermore, AMI systems have been shown to be of significant benefit to existing outage management processes. Each of these applications is explored below.
