Abstract
The case for companies to assist their professional personnel in advancing their skills and knowledge is argued. The steps to be taken by management in implementing a professional development program are discussed. They are: diagnosing company need; interpreting the findings; matching job assignments; and transferring responsibilities. The reasons why managers are reluctant to discuss these issues are examined.
