  • Abstract
We have developed a precision scanning instrument whereby an arbitrary magnetoresistive (MR) head may be used to read or write test bits on standard magnetic media. A high resolution, linearized positioning stage is used to raster-scan recording media (either a hard disk platter or tape coupon) with respect to a commercial MR read/write head. The scanning is performed with the slider in physical contact with the media. As with a spin stand, this instrument can be used to evaluate recording media and MR heads. However, with its superior positioning accuracy and its ability to read and write in contact, this “Magneto-Resistance Microscope” (MRM) has the potential to address fundamental issues associated with recording at densities approaching 10 Gbits/in2
