Abstract
Three dimensional fringing fields of the writing part of the merged magnetoresistive heads with a flat and a partially trimmed shared pole have been computed numerically. Partial trimming of the shared pole considerably improves the track density of the MR head by means of reduction of a side write and a side erase bands. The influence of the shared pole geometry and pole material on recording performance of the merged MR head has been discussed
