  • Abstract
It is suggested that more explicit representation of the knowledge underlying a system leads to better explanations from that system. The purpose is to provide a background for the two articles following (M.C. Tanner and A.M. Keuneke see ibid., p.50-57; W. Swartout et al. see ibid., p.58-64), which examine explanation in expert systems.<>
