Abstract
Presents an analytic derivation and performance-evaluation of bit synchronisers based only on the knowledge of received signal zero-crossing epochs and using maximum-likelihood estimation principles. The approach aims at easing the realisability of suboptimum structures, especially in the case of high bit rate systems. The authors first consider signals without telegraph distortion which lead to a conceptually simple synchroniser without significant performance degradation for an adequate pulse shaping. Signals with telegraph distortion give more complex synchronisers, as the structure attempts to cancel this distortion. However, if a raised-cosine pulse shape is considered, with practical values of the roll-off factor, the synchroniser can be greatly simplified without performance degradation.<>
