Abstract
Reasons are given for employing a pulse-compression technique in an experimental, S-band radar system requiring a very high range resolution. The advantages of using waveguide operating close to its cutoff frequency as a dispersive line are outlined. The problem of producing an f.m. transmitted signal matched to the delay characteristics of the dispersive line is considered, and attention is paid to the effects of line attenuation and the reduction of range sidelobes associated with the compressed pulse. The design of the experimental radar system is briefly outlined, and the resulting shape of the compressed pulse is compared with that predicted by calculation.
