Abstract
We consider the organization and performance of a microcellular code-division multiple-access system that supports voice, video and data services over the personal communications band near 1.9 GHz. Protection of such a system from overload by preventing admission of more calls than can be supported is important to ensure that the required grades of service are satisfied. We report on the multiservice call capacities achievable under static and dynamic conditions. Call admission is tightly linked to the ongoing power control operations for calls already admitted. The power transmitted by the base and the interference seen by the receiver at the base station provide ready indications of the traffic conditions in each cell. Traffic reports from adjacent cells are used to take advantage of the higher traffic capacity of a cell when out-of-cell interference is diminished.
