Abstract
Describes early days of a preform fabrication process for optical fibers named vapor-phase axial deposition (VAD) method. This includes not only technical aspects but also the processes of the invention and research environment. It was about 10 years from 1970 to 1980 just before the optical fiber communication systems were introduced into a practical application.
