Abstract
A mathematical model is developed to represent an h.v. d.c. link in a.c. transient stability studies. Basic comparisons are then carried out on a digital computer between purely a.c. and a.c.-d.c. interconnected 3-machine systems. The effect of adding emergency controls to the d.c. link is investigated and it is concluded that with the help of such controls the d.c. link can improve considerably the transient stability limits of the a.c. power system.
