  • Abstract
    This paper examines the principle of reluctance augmentation, as applied to shaded-pole motors, to assess its value. The assessment is accomplished using a computer-borne analysis to redesign an existing commercially manufactured motor. The characteristics of the redesigned machines obtained with and without the use of the reluctance-augmentation effect are then compared. It is shown that the greatest advantage offered by the use of the reluctance-augmentation principle is in the increase of starting torque.
