Abstract
Recent developments in small permanent magnet design, based on the hollow cylindrical flux source (HCFS) principle, are applied to high-gradient magnetic filters (HGMF) with a variety of potential applications. The permanent magnet is used to provide a background field by which a matrix of ferromagnetic fibers is magnetized. The magnet, the matrix, and the filter cleaning method are described. The design is of particular interest for applications requiring either the absence of live power supplies or compactness of design
