  • Abstract
The sliding behavior of a magnetic head slider in contact-start-stop (CSS) operation is closely related to disk wear and disk failure. Two independent simple optical systems, each composed of a position photosensor and a laser, have been developed to measure the sliding motion. One is for detecting absolute vertical displacement with 0.04-μm resolution and the other measures absolute angular displacements with 1-s resolution. In the experiments, 5 1/4 in sputter disks, which are made to be easily damaged, and mini-Winchester sliders are used, and the slider motions in the contact-start-stop process are measured. Abnormal pitching motion of the slider, which seems to cause the disk damage, is found in the first rotation after the disk starts
