Abstract
A number of partial-response (PR) systems that are suitable for magnetic recording are discussed. The error probabilities in bit-by-bit detection are obtained as functions of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the playback point under the assumptions of raised cosine equalization, additive Gaussian noise, and the presence of timing errors. Both low- and high-density performances are considered. The effect of narrowband amplitude-modulation noise is also considered
