Abstract
We investigated the transient contact between a magnetic recording slider and a rotating disk using finite-element analysis. We determined the maximum temperature and the maximum plastic strain in the contact region as a function of impact conditions and the corner radius of the impacting slider. We observed a strong dependence of the maximum temperature and the maximum plastic strain on the impact conditions and slider corner radius. We examined the effect of substrate properties for both glass and aluminum disks.
