Abstract
The definition of standards for optical networking is a new work item for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) 1997-2000 Study Period. The authors provide a brief overview of this nascent standards development effort, with a specific focus on key issues currently under discussion that, when resolved, will have far-reaching impact on the ultimate realization of “optical networking”
